Description

This 1887 Great Britain Crown was issued to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of her reign. The obverse features the distinctive Jubilee Head portrait, designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, showing Victoria facing left wearing a small crown, veil and jewellery. The detailed portrait reflects the mature monarch and is accompanied by the Latin legend identifying her as Queen of the Britons and Defender of the Faith.

The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated St George and the Dragon design, with St George mounted on horseback and striking the dragon beneath him. The date, 1887, appears below the design, with Pistrucci’s initials, “B.P.”, adding a further detail to this iconic reverse. The coin’s reeded edge and finely milled surfaces complete its classic Victorian appearance.
