1849 Great Britain Victoria Gold Sovereign AU55

Description

An attractive 1849 Victoria gold sovereign, graded AU55 by NGC. The coin features William Wyon’s Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, with the date below and the inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. The reverse carries Jean Baptiste Merlen’s elegant crowned Royal Arms shield, surrounded by a laurel wreath with the floral emblems of England, Scotland and Ireland below.

This 1849 issue is part of the second, larger Young Head design, introduced in 1848. With its attractive gold appearance and high Almost Uncirculated NGC grade, it is a desirable example of early Victorian coinage.
